Statement regarding the curriculum:

The Management and Staff of Riverton Childcare will ensure that the Curriculum provides experiences that enrich children's lives and provide them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions they need to tackle new challenges.

Guidelines

Riverton Childcare will enhance children's learning and development through planning. We will plan to meet children's individual needs, and to encourage their strengths and interests. The steps in the planning cycle are:

  1. Observations of children's interests, strengths, needs and behaviours.
  2. Planning based on observations. Planned experiences might focus on individuals, groups, a particular age group, an area of play or part of the environment.
  3. Consultation with parents either verbally, written or both
  4. Learning experiences with specific learning outcomes, which reflect the strands and goals of Te Whäriki, the Early Childhood Curriculum.
  5. Evaluation and assessment of learning outcomes and identifying further strengths, interests and needs that could be a basis for further planning.

By using the strands and goals of Te Whäriki in our planning we will foster children's cognitive, creative, cultural, emotion, physical and social development. Planned learning experiences will take place both indoors and outdoors, with all ages of children, and with different sized groups. Free play is another area of curriculum development that we cater for.

There will be opportunities for educators to attend professional development as it is available. This will ensure that educators at Riverton Childcare will be able to understand children's learning and development, and will keep current with good practice for early childhood education.

There will be opportunities presented for children to grow in their understanding of their own culture and in the cultures of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Riverton Childcare has a strong commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi.

By having some consistency in the daily activities at the Centre, we will reflect Belonging, Goal 3 “that children will develop an understanding of the routines, customs, and regular events of the early childhood setting” (p. 60 Te Whäriki) eg nappy changing policy, toileting, meals, sleeps, mat times/music.

The curriculum will be reviewed at staff meetings and in consultation with parents. Parents are welcome at any time to discuss their child's learning and development with the educators.
